BLOGGING & VLOGGING EVERYDAY: CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

Consistency is key.

Hey everyone! I anticipate that you will be seeing a lot more of me starting in August. If you're new to my blog, thanks for stopping by and I hope you stay with me forever (as in subscribe). I also have a channel on YouTube where I share content that is better served with engaging visuals versus just reading it. I came across the awesome, AWESOME Amy Schmittauer of the SaavySexySocial YouTube channel.  She offers great marketing advice that you can implement right away in whatever venture (blog, online brand, YouTube channel, etc.) you're trying to build. She has come up with a way to get vloggers comfortable with being in front of a camera and it's called VEDA. VEDA stands for Vlog Every Day in August (also April). VEDA is also a challenge of consistency. Viewers like to know that they can depend on regular uploads from YouTubers they're subscribed to.

I attempted VEDA in April, but I was totally unprepared. This month is going to be different. It's going to be much much better. I've already come up with some topics that I'll be vlogging about, so there's absolutely no way that I could not have anything to talk about.

If I do run out Amy's also got that covered with a suggested topic for each day in August! I will be sharing each vlog that I upload right here on LuvMika87.

If you would like to participate in VEDA, click right HERE to learn more and sign up. Don't worry it's free to any and everyone!

If you have anymore vlog topic ideas please comment below or email them to me at luvmika87@gmail.com

4C HAIR WASH DAY: Renpure Originals, Hibiscus Tea Rinse, and the Best Conditioners Ever

Hey everyone! I had a wash day this past weekend and decided to share it with you. It's definitely not your typical wash day product commercial. I think ladies on a tight budget would appreciate this one because the products that I used were very cheap. One of the products was actually made by yours truly.

My wash day regimen is pretty consistent in regards to the steps I take. I shampoo, rinse, detangle with a conditioner, rinse, and finish it off with a deep conditioner. What isn't quite consistent is the products that I use. What can I say, I love to see what else is out there and how my hair responds to it!
Check out my wash day method and what products I used on this particular day!

DIY : Hibiscus Tea Rinse for Natural Hair

How about some tea...for your hair?!

A tea rinse is a treatment for your hair in which you basically brew a tea and drench your hair in it. What your hair receives from the rinse varies with the tea you choose. Black tea and green tea contain caffeine and it's believed rinsing your hair with it will promote hair growth.

After reading quite a few articles about tea rinses, I thought about making a hibiscus tea rinse for myself! Of course I looked up the possible benefits of using hibiscus tea. It turns out that in addition to promoting  hair growth, it discourages split ends, and prevents premature hair greying.

When to Use It
The consensus is that the order for using your tea rinse during your wash day regimen is to:

1. Shampoo , 2. Tea Rinse, & 3. Deep Condition.

Tea rinses tend to give your hair a hard feeling. Using a deep conditioner, adds that softness back to your hair.

How to Make It
Here's how I made my Hibiscus Tea Rinse. Most tea rinses are made from teabags containing dried herbs, but I see hibiscus flowers everywhere on my way to and from work and other places so I figured why not pick a few and make it fresh. Here's a video of my DIY below!

It is way to soon for me to share my thoughts on what the tea rinse is doing to my hair if anything at all so I will be following up on this after a few months.

Have you tried tea rinsing? Let me know your thoughts on it!

My Natural Hair Story : I Wasn't Always Happy to be Nappy

"I hate to say it, but I wanted to relax my hair..."

When did you go natural? Did you big chop or transition? These are just a couple of questions that you ask someone that you're trying to get to know as it pertains to their natural hair. I've also asked these questions in person and in interviews for this blog , but I can't personally answer them because I've never relaxed my hair.

That's me rocking a chunky twist out on shrunken hair.

I've been natural for 27 years. Although I've been natural for so long, I can only take ownership for the last 6 years. Up until 2009, my hair has been maintained by my mother, kitchen beauticians, or professional hair braiders with actual salons. It was not until 2009, that I became conscious of maintaining my hair through research. When I say research I mean diving into the YouTube world and discovering the natural hair community that was on there. I found inspiration and natural hair care education in YouTubers like  BlackOnyx77 , African Export, and Naptural85. I learned not only how to care for my thick, kinky 4c hair, but I came to love it. However, I wasn't always happy to be nappy.

Elementary school days were filled with puffs and cornrows.
When I was younger, you couldn't catch me outside of my home with my hair out in a fro or even some jumbo prison braids. I thought I looked crazy and that my hair was not pretty. In elementary school, most girls were still natural , but that changed drastically by the time I got to high school. The majority of my female classmates wore relaxed hair or were wearing weaves. I hate to say it, but I wanted to relax my hair too.

I wanted to relax my hair because everyone else was relaxed. Seeing my classmates simply make a couple of passes with a fine toothed comb to yield perfectly laid hair was something I wanted to be able to do. I knew that my hair was just as long as theirs, shoot sometimes even longer than theirs, but my hair didn't hang down. I wanted to show that my hair was just as long. I wanted to have hair to swipe out of my face, hair to put up in hair bobble and use a ton of gel to create that silly peacock, fan looking style with the hair on the other end. I wanted those fly away hairs at the nape of my neck. I didn't know it then, but it was hair that was broken. I wanted to relaxed my hair for all these reasons, but I never did thanks to my dad.

I often got my hair braided with synthetic hair in high school.
My mother was the constant  in my life. However, one thing that I will love my dad forever for, is when he put  his foot down about me getting my hair relaxed. He was adamant about me not doing it until I was an adult and on my own. I was not upset at all (well maybe just a little), but was looking forward to the moment I could relax my hair.

Many years of protective styles passed and before I knew it I was in college focused on getting my Bachelors of Science in Biology. My hair was the last thing on my mind, but I did realize that I was an adult. Technically I could go to a salon and relax my hair, but the perception of natural hair in society was just beginning to change. I noticed more women making the decision to go natural here in the VI and in the media. Those that were still relaxed were starting to rock afro texture hair pieces. Drawstring afro puffs had become such a trend that people were asking if my own puff was a hair piece. It was at that point that I decided to stay natural.

Protective styles, buns, and pops of color with synthetic hair.

To me it didn't make sense to relax my hair only to turn around and start rocking styles that mimic natural hair. It made better sense to love my hair for what it is and wear wigs or weaves whenever I wanted the look of relaxed hair.

My 1st time ever doing crotchet braids.
I started to do my own hair in 2009 and started to document my styles in a Facebook album called Mika's Naptural Styles (Naptural85 obviously inspired the name). Through inspiration from YouTube tutorials and flat out experimenting, I learned that there is so much that I can do in my hair. I even learned to do my own kinky twists and marley twists thanks to the WorldofBraiding YouTube channel. Although I got lots of inspiration from YouTube, I felt that women with my kinky, thick 4c texture were not being represented enough. That fact partially contributed to my decision to start making YouTube videos in addition to starting this blog. I want to inspire and encourage women to love their hair for what it is and to understand that they can conquer it.

This is my natural hair story and the journey continues.

LAZY DAY 4C NATURAL HAIR BUN : Perfect for Lazy Naturals

"...the less you do to your hair, the better off it is." -Mika

Have you ever wished that you could just snap your fingers or blink and your hair is done? I have too! Sorry to burst your bubble, but until we get a magic lamp it's not going to happen any time soon. However, there are ways to quickly style our hair for those lazy days. My lazy day care free bun is my go to hair style for those days when I just don't  care to dedicate more than a few minutes to styling my hair.

Even if you're not a lazy natural, this look is great for the days when you have 3 minutes to get your hair done and get out the door. There are also benefits to rocking buns like this.

Benefits of Lazy Day Buns

Minimal Hair Manipulation - Sometimes the less you do to your hair, the better off it is. If you're not doing much to it, there's less opportunities for your hair to experience any breakage which allows noticeable growth over time.

Spares Tension on Edges - In the lazy bun tutorial below, you can see that there was a lot of slack in my Ouchless Goody Headband. So much in fact that I had to secure the excess with a knot. This gives my edges a break from tension that tends to happen when creating tight, cleaner looking buns.

Let Go and Let Frizz - A care free bun should have somewhat of a messy look so there's absolutely no need for a ridiculous amount of gel usage or brushing. I spritzed my hair with water for moisture and sealed that in with African Royale's Hot Six Oil.

I'm trying to do as little to my hair as possible to reduce breakage that is an obvious given with my 4c hair. This bun is definitely something I will be wearing to let my hair be.

DIY Summer Shorts: Turn Long Pants Into Cute Shorts (BONUS DIY Bow Tutorial)

Hey everyone! The 4th of July has come and gone already but this tutorial transcends holiday occasions. Early last year, I bought a long blue and white polka dot pants from Forever 21+ during one of my Puerto Rico trips. I quickly found out that it was one of those pants that fit like a glove when you 1st put them on, but leaves you looking frumpy by the end of the day. The fact that the pants was blue with white polka dots did not help either. I got compliments on it, but it just screamed PJs to me so they became a permanent fixture in my closet "forever alone".

Until I turned them into a cute pair of cuffed shorts for the 4th of July. I loved how they turned out and they are no longer a lost cause in my closet.

Here's my DIY on how to turn any pair of long pants you've cast away into cute shorts you'll love!

Here's how I rocked my DIY shorts on the 4th of July!

Natural Hair Interview: Renee Dawes (founder of Naturelle Grow)

"...so whether your hair is fine, coarse, thick or thin that is the way God created it and He makes no mistakes..." - Renee Dawes

Renee Dawes is the entreprenuer behind the hand made, natural ingredient hair products of NaturelleGrow.   With thousands of sales on NaturelleGrow's Etsy Shop and a feature on ESSENCE.com, it's safe to say that Renee's natural hair concoctions that promote hair growth and all around healthy hair are something to be desired and cherished. I was honored with the opportunity to interview Renee about her NaturelleGrow products, about becoming an entrepreneur, and her opinion on the hot topic of "natural hair texture discrimination".

What was the catalyst in your natural hair journey? How long have you been natural?

In my younger years I was relaxed. In high school, I wore weaves a lot and the glue I was using caused my hair to become so damaged that my edges were gone. My scalp was white and flaky. Then, I began sewing in the weaves. I had the mindset that my hair wouldn’t grow. It got to the point where I couldn’t even relax my hair anymore; it was so thin. So, in 2007 I slowly transitioned to natural. I have been natural for nearly 8 years.

How did you come up with the name NautrelleGrow?

I was looking for a name that represented hair growth and naturalism all in one.

What contributed to your decision to start formulating natural hair products?
I was fascinated with growing my hair long and healthy. As a result, I spent countless hours researching and testing organic and natural ingredients that promised to grow long hair. As I experimented more and more, I soon discovered which all-natural ingredients proved most beneficial for hair growth, and learned how to combine them for optimal results.

I appreciate things in general that are handmade because I know it takes real love and passion to create them. Can you explain the importance of using natural ingredients in your products?
Natural ingredients deliver benefits like none other. Like eating natural can transform your body to the best that it can be, applying natural ingredients to your hair has the same affects.

In a sea of natural hair care products, what makes NaturelleGrow unique?
NaturelleGrow is a David fighting against Goliath. There are a large amount of hair company giants on the market offering mass-produced hair products. We are unique in the fact that our products are (1) Blended by hand in small batches, (2) Our products contain fresh, natural homegrown ingredients, and (3) Most importantly, our products have not been sitting on shelves. They are made to order giving our customer the best product available.

I’ve looked at hundreds of reviews on your Etsy shop and naturalistas everywhere love NaturelleGrow products. What are your best sellers?
My customer faves are my Marshmallow Root Deep Conditioner and Mango & Coconut Water Deep Conditioner.

(from left to right) NaturelleGrow Marshmallow Root Deep Conditioner, NaturelleGrow Marshmallow Root Cleanser, and Naturelle Grow Mango & Coconut Water Deep Conditioner . The marshmallow deep conditioner are recommended for type 4 hair chicks. The deep conditioners are also customer favorites form this brand.

Are there any particular products that you would recommend for women with type 4 hair? Which ones would our hair absolutely love us for?
I would recommend our Marshmallow Root Cleanser and Marshmallow Root Deep Conditioner

What are 3 hair styling tips or tricks that you’ve found to promote healthy hair and hair growth along with the use of your NaturelleGrow products?

The top 3 styling tips that I found to promote healthy hair and hair growth are:
  1. Low/No Heat Styling
  2. Wrapping your hair up at night
  3. Take a good hair vitamin
One topic in the natural hair community that has been in everyone’s ear is “hair texture discrimination”. The general sentiment is that within the natural hair community looser, curly hair types (like type 3s) seem to get more support (sponsorships, subscribers, likes, followers, etc.) in comparison to women with kinky textures (4a-4c hair type). As the owner of a natural hair product company, what is your opinion about this hot topic? How should we personally feel about our own hair?

I believe that each person is wonderfully and beautifully made- so whether your hair is fine, coarse, thick or thin that is the way God created it and He makes no mistakes. You are perfectly made in His image.

For the entrepreneurs and anyone contemplating taking the entrepreneurial leap, what are three pieces of advice/ encouragement that you would give them?
(1) Don’t give up, take pride in what you are doing
(2) Integrity, customer service
(3) Always continue to seek new inventions
